COMPUTER SIMULATION OF LIQUID-LIQUID PHASE TRANSITION IN LIQUID Al2O3 Vo Van
Hoang, Suhk Kun Oh* * Abstract: We investigate pressure-induced structural transformation in liquid Al2O3 by Molecular Dynamics (MD) method. Simulations were done in the basic cube under periodic boundary conditions containing 3000 ions with Born-Mayer type pair potentials. Structure of liquid Al2O3 model with real density at ambient pressure is in good agreement with Landrons experiment. In order to study the liquid-liquid phase transition, seven models of liquid alumina at temperature 2500 K and at densities ranged from 2.80 g/cm3 to 4.5 g/cm3 have been built. The microstructure of Al2O3 systems has been analyzed through pair radial distribution functions, coordination number distributions, interatomic distances and bond-angle distributions. And we found clear evidence of a structural transition in liquid alumina from a tetrahedral to an octahedral network. According to our results, this transformation occurred at densities in the range from 3.9 g/cm3 to 4.5 g/cm3. We also presented the dynamical aspects of the problem that self-diffusion constants of Al cations and O anions strongly reduced with density. The dynamical heterogeneity of models strongly changed during liquid-liquid phase transition. Dynamical heterogeneity of systems has been studied through atomic displacement distributions and local mean squared atomic displacement distributions. PACS number(s): 78.55.Qr, 61.43.Bn, 61.43.Fs |
